Woodbridge Police Seek Witnesses To Fatal Weekend Accident

WOODBRIDGE – Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian hit and run motor vehicle accident that occurred on Saturday, March 13, on Route 1 South in Avenel.  Authorities are asking witnesses to contact Sgt. Eric Nelson of the Woodbridge Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit at 1-732-634-7700.

According to Woodbridge Police Chief William Trenery, Angela Russell, 42, of Carteret, was fatally struck by a motor vehicle at approximately 7:26 p.m.  The preliminary investigation determined that Russell and her husband had stopped at the Quick Chek convenience store located on the northbound side of Route 1 at the intersection of Avenel Street. For unknown reasons, Russell got out of the parked vehicle and attempted to walk across Route 1.

Witnesses report that Russell crossed the northbound lanes and was standing next to the concrete barrier in the southbound lanes when she was struck by a vehicle travelling southbound.  Paramedics from the Avenel First Aid Squad and Rahway Medic 10 treated her at the scene of the accident.

She was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:55 p.m. by the Middlesex County Medical Examiners Office.
