Nationally-Ranked Pioneers Prepare For NJAC Basketball Tournaments

WAYNE – The William Paterson women’s (24-1, 12-1 NJAC) and men’s (23-2, 12-1 NJAC) basketball teams will enjoy first-round byes for the upcoming New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament as the top seeds in the North Division.

Both teams will advance directly to the semifinal round, with the women playing Tuesday, Feb. 23, and the men Wednesday, Feb. 24.  Each game will tip off at 7 p.m. at the Rec Center.

For home NJAC Tournament contests, William Paterson students with valid I.D. will be admitted for free (first 125 for semifinal, first 150 for final), courtesy of the Student Government Association, the Office of the Dean of Students, and the New Jersey Department of Human Services. General admission will be $5.  Visiting students, children 12 and under, and senior citizens will be admitted for $2.

The Pioneer men, the overall top seed in the conference, will face the winner of the first-round game between No. 3 North seed Ramapo (17-8, 7-6 NJAC) and No. 2 South seed Rowan (16-8, 7-6 NJAC) to be played Saturday, Feb. 20, in Glassboro.

The other first-round contest will feature No. 3 South seed Kean (9-15, 6-7 NJAC) at No. 2 North seed Rutgers-Newark (19-6, 9-4 NJAC), with the winner advancing to play at No. 1 South seed Richard Stockton (19-6, 9-4 NJAC) Feb. 24.  If the Pioneers win their semifinal contest, they will host the championship game Saturday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m.

The Pioneer women will face the winner of the first-round game between No. 3 North seed Ramapo (11-14, 4-9 NJAC) and No. 2 South seed Rowan (16-8, 9-4 NJAC) to be played Saturday, Feb. 20, in Glassboro.  The other first-round contest will feature No. 3 South seed Richard Stockton (13-12, 7-6 NJAC) at No. 2 North seed Montclair State (15-9, 9-4 NJAC), with the winner advancing to play at No. 1 South seed Kean (24-1, 13-0 NJAC) Feb. 23.  If the Cougars win their semifinal contest, they will host the championship game Friday, Feb. 26, at 7:00 p.m.

The William Paterson men, currently ranked eighth in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, most recently defeated New Jersey City, 66-55, Feb. 17.  The Pioneers saw their school-record 20-game win streak come to an end with a 55-46 loss at Rutgers-Newark Feb. 15.

The Pioneer women, tied for seventh in the in the USA Today/ESPN/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 Poll and eighth in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, most recently earned an 86-40 home win against New Jersey City Feb. 17 for their 10th straight victory.
