New participants as well as experienced volunteers are welcome to join the committee, organizers said. The committee is seeking a mission-advocacy volunteer to distribute educational information on cancer prevention and early detection to event participants. Other positions are open to those who wish to assist in various aspects of event planning.

Local companies, community groups, civic associations, religious organizations, and schools are encouraged to participate, organizers said. Groups can form teams, or sponsor the event. Sponsorships can be tailored to meet a group’s ability to give, according to organizers.

Entertainers and activity coordinators of all types are needed to volunteer their services throughout the entire 12-hour event, organizers said.

Day-of-event volunteers are needed to assist with onsite logistic duties, and various tasks throughout the day, including decorating and luminaria setup.
The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Clark is an event that brings the community together to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

Relay is an overnight celebration where teams and individuals camp out, barbecue, enjoy entertainment, and take turns walking, running or wheeling around a track “relay” style to raise funds to fight cancer. Relay For Life has spread to more than 5,000 communities across the country.

Volunteers and participants are needed for this annual event that helps people stay well, get well, find cures, and fight back in the Union County area.

The 12-hour “relay” begins with the Survivor Lap, where cancer survivors are honored by the community for inspiring others to celebrate life. In 2009, more than 500,000 cancer survivors walked in the opening ceremonies of Relay For Life events in communities across the country. At nightfall, participants will light hundreds of luminaria candles around the track in a touching ceremony to honor cancer survivors as well as friends and family members lost to the disease. Relay For Life represents hope that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.

The American Cancer Society-Relay For Life of Clark will take place on Friday, June 11, beginning at 6 p.m., and will end the following morning at 6 a.m. The event is being held at Arthur L. Johnson High School Track & Field, 365 Westfield Avenue, Clark.
