Manasquan Man Admits Sexual Assaults

NEW BRUNSWICK—A 43-year-old Manasquan man pleaded guilty Tuesday to two counts of sexual assault, admitting he molested two girls on separate occasions, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan announced.

Robert Morrissey, 43, waived his right to trial and admitted sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl in East Brunswick on one occasion between July and September 2001, and said he sexually assaulted the other victim, a 5-year-old girl, on one occasion in Old Bridge sometime between 2003 and 2006. Both victims were known to Morrissey.

Under a plea agreement negotiated with Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Christie L. Bevacqua, the defendant will be sentenced to 20 years in a New Jersey state prison, but that penalty will be served concurrently with a 30-year prison term he is facing for sexually abusing two boys, ages 13 and 9, in Old Bridge in 2004.

In that case, Morrissey was found guilty on January 29, 2009, of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and endangering the welfare of the boys on various occasions between June 1, 2004, and August 31, 2004.

During the trial, Assistant Prosecutor Bevacqua presented evidence and testimony showing that the defendant provided the boys with pornography and then sexually assaulted them in his home in Old Bridge, when he lived in the township.

Following the conviction, Morrissey’s bail, which had been set at $350,000, was revoked and he has remained in custody at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick.

Morrissey is scheduled to be sentenced at the Middlesex County Courthouse in New Brunswick on June 4, 2010, by Superior Court Judge Dennis Nieves for assaulting the boys.

Superior Court Judge Barbara Stolte will sentence the defendant on the same day for assaulting the girls.

In addition to the 30-year prison term, Morrissey faces probation for the rest of his life, and will be required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law.
