Hard Times

Most people do not read history books on economics, yet this has a great effect on life in general.

The April 2010 issue of ‘American History’ has a short article on “Hard Times”, the major Panics, Depressions, and Recessions in American history. I recommend reading it at your local library. A short article only condenses and simplifies the historical record. The article omits the events that led to the War of 1775.

The nine featured are:
1819 Great Land Bust
1837 Cotton Crash
1857 Railroad Meltldown
1873 Bank Collapse
1893 Gold Run
1907 Bank Rescue
1920 Price Tailspin
1929 Stock Market Crash
1980 Fed Rate Hike
