NEW BRUNSWICK—An Irish proverb says a good laugh is one of the best cures a doctor can offer. In this case, oncology nurses at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) are prescribing the laughter as they gear up for the fourth annual CINJ Comedy Night, proceeds from which will go to the Cancer Institute of New Jersey Foundation to benefit CINJ Nursing Education. CINJ is a Center of Excellence of UMNDJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

The show, on Sunday April 25 at the Prime Time Comedy Club and Theatre in Sayreville, will feature comedian Joey Kola. Now working as the warm-up comic on the “Martha Stewart Show,” Kola has appeared on Comedy Central as well as “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “The Late Show with David Letterman.”  Also appearing will be John Larocchia.  Known as the “New York Fire Comic,” Larocchia is a retired New York firefighter who has been performing stand up comedy for nearly 20 years.

Over the past three years, the event has raised nearly $40,000, which has been applied toward providing nursing education scholarships and classroom education; bringing in nationally-known guest speakers to talk about evidence-based nursing practice; and offering access to the latest in equipment and technology related to the field of oncology nursing and education.

Pamela Scott, RN, research nurse clinician and co-chair of the Nursing Education Committee at CINJ, says this fundraiser allows for CINJ to invest in the future of its oncology nurses.  “This support provides the critical tools needed for our nurses to build leadership skills and excel in the rapidly changing field of oncology nursing.  This ultimately translates into the highest quality of care for our patients.”

The evening will begin with dinner at 5 p.m. followed by the 7 p.m. show.  Festivities will include a tricky tray auction.  Tickets are $35 each if purchased by April 2 and $40 after.  Tickets can be purchased by calling the CINJ Foundation at 1-732-235-8614 or at www.cinjfoundation.org.

The CINJ Foundation raises funds to support cancer research, treatment, prevention and education programs at CINJ.  Gifts are received from corporations, foundations, individuals, and through special events and planned gifts.  To make a tax-deductible gift to New Jersey’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center call 1-732-235-8614 or visit www.cinjfoundation.org.
