SPRINGFIELD—Car crashes are the leading cause of death among 16- to 19-year olds. The AAA New Jersey Automobile Club advises parents to start preparing well in advance and take an active role in their teen driver’s education.

To help educate parents and teens, and get them ready for the learning-to-drive process, AAA New Jersey is hosting a Dare to Prepare workshop on Wednesday, Feb. 17 from 7-9 p.m. at AAA Springfield, 135 Route 22 East.

Dare to Prepare is a fun, exciting and interactive workshop where families can learn about topics relating to teen driving that may not be covered in traditional driver’s education programs. Highlights of the 90-minute, interactive session include a comprehensive overview of New Jersey’s GDL, parents’ roles and responsibilities, and practical tips for teaching teens to drive.

“Dare to Prepare targets the issues that families face as the teen driver moves from the passenger seat to the driver’s seat,” explains Ed Baginski, traffic safety specialist for the Florham Park-based club. “Parents and teens are encouraged to attend the workshop together as it’s intended to raise teens’ awareness of traffic safety issues and increase parental involvement in the critical learning-to-drive process.”

Dare to Prepare is not intended to replace traditional driver’s education, but instead serve as a supplementary program designed to facilitate early discussion of driving safety issues between parents and teens.

A registration fee of $20 per family includes admission to the workshop as well as a complimentary copy of AAA’s Driver-ZED 3.0 DVD. Developed by the non-profit AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, Driver-ZED 3.0 puts teens in a virtual driver’s seat and teaches them how to identify, assess and react to a range of potential driving dangers through 100 live-action scenarios.

To register, call the New Jersey Automobile Club at 1-973-245-4860 or email jdemby@njac.aaa.com to request a registration form.
