January 22, 2010

PERTH AMBOY – Police arrested a Perth Amboy man and charged him with murdering a woman whose body was dumped in Virginia, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan announced.

Franklin Camacho Jr., 40, was arrested by the New Jersey State Police on Thursday and was charged with the murder of the woman, whose name and age are being withheld pending notification of her next of kin.

The woman, who was known to Camacho, was the victim of a homicide, authorities said. The results of an autopsy performed yesterday by authorities in Virginia were not immediately available.

An investigation by Detective Ralph Pineiro of the Perth Amboy Police Department and Investigator Eleazar Ricardo of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that Camacho struck the woman at an undisclosed location in Perth Amboy, authorities said. Preliminary indications are that the attack occurred sometime on Jan. 19.

A missing persons report subsequently was filed when the victim could not be located. Police later obtained a search warrant and examined the scene of the attack.

Investigators also determined that Camacho had driven to Virginia and was heading back to New Jersey. State Police were notified and they stopped Camacho on the New Jersey Turnpike at Exit 6 in Hamilton shortly before 6 a.m. on Jan. 21.

Authorities in Prince William County, Va. subsequently contacted Middlesex County investigators, reporting that the body of a woman, matching a description of the victim from Perth Amboy, was recovered from a trash can in the parking lot of a shopping center in Woodbridge, Va.

Camacho is being held without bail. A court hearing date has not yet been scheduled.
