EDISON—On Monday, Jan. 11, Christine Cerminaro of Scotch Plains, the Middle School mathematics teacher at The Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison, revealed the names of the eighth grade students who won the AMC 8 (American Mathematics Competition).
Semin (Sam) Cheon of Edison was awarded first place. Sam is the son of Chul Seung Kim and Sung Ok Ko. Shafeeq Ibraheem of Piscataway won second place. He is the son of Dr. Sarafa Ibraheem and Shakirat Ibraheem. Tommy Papas of Plainfield was awarded third place. He is the son of Alexis Moloney of Plainfield and Steve Papas of East Hanover. Each of the students received certificates.
The examination is designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem-solving skills, and provides an opportunity to apply the concepts taught at the junior high level to the problems which not only range from easy to difficult but also cover a wide range of applications.
Many problems are designed to challenge students and to offer problem-solving experiences beyond those provided in most junior high school mathematics classes.
