Relay For Life Of Clark To Kick Off 2010 Cancer Fight

CLARK—The American Cancer Society invites residents of Clark  and surrounding communities to learn about Relay For Life, an overnight community celebration where individuals and teams camp-out and barbecue, while taking turns walking or running around a track “relay” style.

At nightfall, participants light hundreds of luminary candles around the track in a moving ceremony to honor cancer survivors and to remember those lost to the disease. It is an opportunity to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back.

The purpose of Relay For Life of Clark is to raise funds for American Cancer Society research, programs and patient services. Relay events strengthen communities by bringing people together in a collective effort to educate the public in cancer prevention and detection, and by raising awareness in the fight against this disease.

The American Cancer Society will be sponsoring their “Relay Kick-Off Celebration” at Bistro 1051, 1051 Raritan Road, Clark. This informative celebration and meeting will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. The Kick-Off will be led by members of the Relay Volunteer Committee and American Cancer Society staff partner, Betty Newborn.

Guest speakers scheduled for the Kick-Off are “ACS Hero of Hope” Vito Toto, who is an eleven-year cancer survivor, and Michele Magee – Race For A Cure team captain, who will educate new participants who may be interested in starting a team of their own.

Anyone wishing to honor cancer survivors and caregivers, pay tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer or those interested in starting a team is encouraged to attend the Relay For Life of Clark Kick-Off Celebration.
