Union Catholic Girls Win Holiday Tournament

ELIZABETH—Union Catholic High School of Scotch Plains won the 2009 Dr. Rose Marie Battaglia Christmas Basketball Tournament, hosted by Benedictine Academy and the Benedictine Academy Parents Association.

Basketball teams from eight New Jersey high schools competed during the four-day event at the Elizabeth school. Union Catholic defeated Vernon Township High School by a score of 40-34 in the championship game. In another tough game, Metuchen High School beat Benedictine Academy 53-32, for third place, leaving Benedictine Academy in fourth place.


Earlier in the day, St. Patrick High School and St. Mary’s High School, both of Elizabeth, played a close game, with St. Mary’s emerging as the winner in a 42-40 squeaker. Snyder High School of Jersey City defeated St. Vincent’s Academy of Newark, 52-30.

The Most Valuable Player Award went to Jasmine Serano of Union Catholic High School.

The tournament is named for Dr. Rose Marie Battaglia, who coached at Benedictine Academy from 1954-58. Her record during her tenure at the all-female Catholic college prep high school was 36-4.  The 1954-55 Benedictine Academy varsity basketball team was undefeated, with a 12-0 record.
