Rutgers Students And The Community-At-Large Get Together On The Dance Floor

NEW BRUNSWICK—On Saturday, Dec. 12, Rutgers Students and the community-at-large will gather to dance at “All That Jazz.” Music for dancing will be provided by Brian Nash.

The dance social takes place from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. in the College Avenue Gym, 130 College Avenue, New Brunswick. Dancers of all ages may attend with or without a partner. This crowd is very friendly and likes to mingle.

The main gym features a 4,570 square foot wooden dance floor. The dance is sponsored by the Rutgers University Recreation Instructional Program and the Ballroom Dance Club and Team. You are encouraged, but not required, to wear theme-inspired “1920s” costumes.

Prior to the dance social, Brian Nash, the team’s founding coach, will teach a two-hour intermediate-level workshop covering American Style tango and swing in the Main Gym from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. At the same time, in the Upper Gym, Carmen Valverde, founder of the dance program at Rutgers Recreation, will teach a basic Hustle workshop for beginning and experienced dancers.

In existence since 1992, the Rutgers University Ballroom Dance Team regularly competes with other college teams such as MIT, U Penn, Binghamton University and Princeton. The team also hosts its own annual competition in April. A portion of the proceeds from the workshops and social will go to support the team’s expenses for coaching, costumes, and travel to competitions. Admission for the dance social is $5 for students with college ID and $15 for non-students, payable at the door. Admission for either workshop is $8 for students with ID and $15 for non-students, also payable at the door.

Non-students, who pay for both the workshop and social, will receive a $5 discount off the Social admission fee. For further information, contact Rutgers Recreation Instructional Program at 1-732-932-8204 between 10:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday or Email Website:
