EDISON – Township officials will be joined by community, family and friends at Edison’s annual Festival of Lights celebration on Monday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. This special holiday event is being staged inside the Jewish Community Center of Middlesex County, 1775 Oak Tree Road, Edison.
The history and origin of Chanukah will be told while specially invited guests light the Township Menorah. The entire community is invited to this celebration. Special guest, Art Shamsky, will participate in the Menorah lighting.
Shamsky was a professional baseball player for 13 years and was a major part of the “Miracle Mets” team that won the 1969 World Championship defeating the Baltimore Orioles. During the championship season, Shamsky batted .300 and led the Mets in the National League Playoffs batting .537 vs. the Atlanta Braves with seven hits in thirteen at-bats.
Immediately after the Menorah Lighting Ceremony, all those in attendance are invited to join the reception at the community center. The popular “Kurt Mann Trio” will provide music beginning at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Children’s entertainer, “Mama Doni”, will provide comedy, audience participation and music, and there will also be a children’s holiday craft table.
The township will be accepting non-perishable foods at this event, which will be donated to the Jewish Family and Vocational Services Food Pantry.
