RAHWAY – An early morning fire killed one woman and left a man with burns over 30 percent of his body, authorities said.
According to officials, the fire broke out in the rear of a multi-family home on Essex Street just before 3 a.m. on Nov. 26.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, the building was engulfed in flames and an injured man was found in the driveway. The victim, identified as Praveen Potluri, was initially taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. He was later transferred to the Burn Center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, where he remained Tuesday morning according to Rahway Fire Department Capt. John Fleischman.
Approximately ten other people were safely evacuated from the building.
After the fire was extinguished, firefighters recovered the body of a woman on the first floor of the home. She was identified as Sravanthi Chowdry, 27, according to Fleischman.
Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to the main part of the building, but a significant portion of the first floor sustained fire damage, officials said.
The cause of the fire was undetermined, according to Fleischman.
