Seton Hall Blitzes NJIT, 93-53, To Improve To 5-0

NEWARK – Sophomore Herb Pope (Aliquippa, Pa) posted his fourth straight double-double with 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting, 11 rebounds, and added five blocks to lead the Seton Hall men’s basketball team to a 93-53 victory over NJIT on Monday night. The Pirates, who improved to 5-0 on the season, used a 23-4 run that spanned into the second half to put the game out of reach.

Junior Jeremy Hazell (Harlem, N.Y.) scored 21 points, and junior Jamel Jackson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted 15 points on five three-pointers off the bench.


The Highlanders (2-4) started off strong in the first half and held a 15-14 lead after a second chance bucket by Sean McCarthy with 12:56 on the clock. Sophomore Jordan Theodore (Englewood, N.J.) scored five points in a 1:32 span to spark a 9-2 run and give SHU a 23-17 edge with 11:02 remaining in the half.

Ryan Regis pulled NJIT within five with 8:05 left, but the Pirates defense cranked up the pressure and held the Highlanders scoreless over the next 5:23 to push the lead to 37-21 with 3:42 before the intermission and held a 15-point lead at the half.

A layup by Hazell capped the rally with 18:43 remaining in regulation, giving Seton Hall a 49-27 advantage. The Pirates never trailed by less than 20 points the rest of the way, and cruised to the win.

SHU shot 50 percent from the floor, while holding NJIT to 30.6 percent. The Pirates also had a season-high 11 blocks.

Isaiah Wilkerson led the Highlanders with 14 points.

Seton Hall returns to action on Thursday, December 3 against Hartford at Prudential Center. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
