UNION COUNTY – The holiday season gets underway this weekend as Union County communities hold their official tree lighting ceremonies.
The holiday season starts in Rahway on Friday, Nov. 27, with the city’s official tree lighting ceremony. The event will be at 7 p.m. at City Hall Plaza. Afterwards, Santa Claus will be on hand to take photos with Rahway children.
Clark’s Winter Festival will be held on Sunday, Nov. 29, at the Municipal Building beginning at 3 p.m. There be music, rides, a petting zoo, and many other family activities. Bring your camera and take a picture with Santa Claus. The highlight of the day will the lighting of township’s tree and menorah at 6 p.m.
Linden’s annual holiday celebration will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4. The tree lighting will take place at City Hall, Wood Avenue and Blancke Street, at 6 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit the Gregorio Recreation Center, 330 Helen Street, at 7 p.m. They will take photos with Linden children and there will be refreshments.
Elizabeth has a number of official tree lighting ceremonies, starting on Monday, Nov. 30, with the 5th Ward Holiday Tree Lighting at The Point, New Point Road and 6th Street. The free event, from 7-8 p.m., will feature caroling, a visit from Santa Claus, music and more.
On Tuesday, Dec. 1, the festivities continue with the holiday tree lighting at the Historic Midtown Special Improvement District Pedestrian Plaza on West Grand Street. From 5:30-6:30 p.m., there will be caroling, a visit from Santa Claus, music and more. The Elizabeth Avenue Partnership will hold another tree lighting ceremony at Union Square Plaza from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 2, is the 2nd Ward Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony at Washington Park, Lidgerwood Avenue and Edgar Road. From 6-8 p.m., enjoy caroling, a visit from Santa Claus, music and more.
The 1st Ward Holiday Tree Lighting will take place from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, at Veterans’ Memorial Park at the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and Front Street. The 5th Ward Holiday Tree Lighting at Kelloggs Park will be later that evening, from 7-8 p.m. Santa Claus will be on hand and there will be caroling and music to enjoy at both events.
On Saturdays, Dec. 5, 12 and 19, the Elizabeth Avenue Partnership will hold a holiday event with a petting zoo and children’s activities from noon-3 p.m. The Elizabeth Public Library will offer holiday crafts and snacks for teens from 2-4 p.m. in the auditorium of the Main Library, 11 South Broad Street.
More tree lighting ceremonies are planned the following week: Monday, Dec. 7, from 7-8 p.m. at Woodruff Park; Wednesday, Dec. 9 from 6-7 p.m. at L. Ron Hubbard Park on Salem Avenue; and Thursday, Dec. 10 from 6-8 p.m. at the Peterstown Recreation Center, 408 Palmer Street.
Elizabeth’s tree lighting schedule will conclude on Wednesday, Dec. 16, at Wilson Park at the intersection of Newark Avenue and Alina Street. The 6-7 p.m. event will feature a visit from Santa Claus, music and more.
