Salvation Army Announces Battle Of The Bells

UNION COUNTY—While the weather has been unstable, the cold and snow of winter are just around the corner. While The Salvation Army is hard at work meeting the needs of the people all year long, the organization’s greatest visibility is during the Thanksgiving/Christmas season.

“Generally, when people think The Salvation Army they are drawn to our seasonal work. Hearts are tender and generous during the holidays, and it is this generosity during the holidays that helps to sustain the year-round ministry of The Salvation Army,” said Captain Sebastian Leonardi.

“With the challenges of our weakening economy, more people are turning to The Salvation Army for assistance. At the same time, with money being tight, there are real financial concerns for even our faithful contributors.”

The Salvation Army of Elizabeth is soliciting individuals and groups to participate in the 2009 “Battle of the Bells” Campaign. The Battle of the Bells involves individuals and groups who “ring the bell” at a kettle location at local businesses in the cities of Elizabeth, Linden, Roselle, Roselle Park and Clark.

The 2009 “Battle of the Bells” campaign will include an official first place award certificate for the individual and group raising the most money during their time of collecting. The following is a listing of Battle of the Bells categories:
1. Youth Children (grades K-6)
2. Youth Teen (grades 7-12)
3. Church Youth
4. Church Adult
5. Church General (mixed ages)
6. Social Services and Fraternal Organizations

In addition to the above Battle of the Bells categories, the following individual Battle of the Bell competitions will be observed:

Battle of the Banks
Battle of the Professionals

Battle of the Fire Fighters

The 2009 Battle of the Bells Campaign will begin Nov. 27, and run through Dec. 24. Any individual or group can sign up to participate for as few or as many hours as they can accommodate in their schedule.
