Here is some feedback I received from readers:
EDISON-I received another e-mail after my April 17 column that the candy store in Menlo Park Mall was Barricini’s. I also heard from another person who would go to this candy store to buy delicious “Fanny Farmer” candy.
PERTH AMBOY-I received the following in an e-mail: “I just came across your Oct. 17, 2008 column on doctors who once practiced in Perth Amboy. My grandfather, Dr. William London was a pediatrician who practiced in Perth Amboy from just after World War I up through the 1970s.”
After my Oct. 23, 2009 Perth Amboy column, Thomas Saboy remembered: “The stores in Perth Amboy were open until 9 p.m. on Friday nights. We would take bus #4 from Hopelawn to Perth Amboy for 5 cents each way.”
WOODBRIDGE-Here is an excerpt from an e-mail which I was asked to pass on to Martha Storey Webb after her Oct. 9 Woodbridge memories and the mention of Choper’s Dept. Store:
“Hello there, My name is Ellen Stahl Parker, daughter of Rosalie Choper Stahl, granddaughter of Morris and Lena Choper and niece of Manny and Milly Choper. I found your post online. I grew up in Woodbridge. It warmed my heart and was wonderful to hear your kind words about my family, of course they are all gone now. I have fond memories of running around Choper’s and upstairs was where my grandparents lived. Main Street was a great place in those days with Jackson Pharmacy, etc. Thanks for putting your memories online.”
Another Woodbridge reader sent me past material showing the following: In 1901, when Edison was known as Raritan, there was the Edgar Clay Railroad and Fireproof Building Co. Railroad.
I would like to thank all my 2009 contributors. I’m hoping to hear from more readers with their memories or past memories for my 2010 columns. I’m looking for past information for St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day or other holidays to be used at the appropriate time of the year.
If you have your own memories or past information for Carteret, Edison, Metuchen, Perth Amboy, Sayreville, South Amboy or Woodbridge you can email me at email@example.com or send copies of your material to me c/o CMD Media, 1139 East Jersey St., Suite 503, Elizabeth NJ, 07201.
