RAHWAY – New Jersey artist Lloyd Garrison has made himself a part of the Christmas tradition for many Rahway residents. His unique Christmas cards capture local holiday memories.
Each year, Garrison paints a new Christmas scene. This year’s card shows the Rahway Hobby Shop as it appeared in 1960.
Garrison said, “The hobby shop was operated by an older man named Joe. He is pictured in the window. The toys mostly were happy toys with big smiles, unlike today’s toys.”
The artist pointed out another detail in the painting. “The card of the toy store shows two small boys looking in the window. The smaller one is me and the other one is my brother.”
Garrison also has copies of last year’s card featuring Walt’s, a favorite hang out for Rahway and Linden residents in the 1950s and 60s, according to the artist.
“It was a place to meet old friends and make new ones. Very few places like that can be found today,” the Garrison said. “They had the best hamburgers and hot dogs.”
“Both of these cards represent a great time,” the artist said. “When we think back, it was a wonderful life.”
Garrison will be at the Union County Performing Arts Center, 1601 Irving Street, Rahway, on Dec. 3 as part of the Rahway Arts District’s “First Thursdays” event. For more information, visit www.rahwayartsdistrict.org.
