TRENTON – State Sen. Nicholas Scutari (D-Union) is expected to become the next chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The role is significant – Republican Governor-elect Christopher Christie will appoint at least eight Superior Court Judges next year. John Wallace, an Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, will also be up for reappointment in 2010. The Democrat-controlled Senate must confirm Christie’s judicial appointments.
Scutari, who has served on the judiciary committee for six years, received some criticism earlier this year for asking tough questions of a judge appointed by Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine. The state senator responded to his detractors, “Contrary to popular belief, this committee is not a rubber stamp. It is a committee of senators that is here to inquire about cases and about judges.”
