ELIZABETH – Last week, a Superior Court judge sentenced Awan Smith to 42 years in state prison for the 2007 murder of Omar Kennedy.
Smith, 36, must serve at least 35 years before becoming eligible for parole. The Elizabeth resident had been arrested a number of times on charges ranging from disorderly persons to domestic violence offenses prior to the killing.
Smith was convicted of shooting Kennedy on Dec. 9, 2007 outside Grady’s Bar on First Street in Elizabeth. The prosecution argued that Smith shot Kennedy as an act of revenge because Kennedy allegedly cut Smith on the cheek with a knife several months earlier.
