HILLSIDE – Facing an unprecedented rise in demand, New Jersey Feeding America food banks are once again asking the public to help Check-Out Hunger. By making a simple donation of $1, $3, or $5 at the check-out counter shoppers can help their neighbors in need. Donations can also be made anytime online at www.checkouthungernj.org.
The Community FoodBank of New Jersey reports that need for nutritious food is up 30 percent at its partner agencies this year – soup kitchens, shelters, pantries, etc. That fact combined with a dramatic rise in unemployment places a great strain on the resources of area food banks.
Last year, Check-Out Hunger had its biggest year ever, in a down economy. Check-Out Hunger 2008 raised $1,289,564 for food banks across the state, an increase of almost 18% over 2007. Since 1992, millions of people have supported the program at food markets and online at www.checkouthungernj.org.
Participating food markets include A&P, Food Basics, Foodtown, Kings, Pathmark, Shop Rite, Super Fresh, Wawa, and Wegmans.
