Union Catholic Teacher Named Finalist For State Award

SCOTCH PLAINS –Barbara Dellanno, humanities curriculum specialist and teacher at Union Catholic High School, has been selected as the 2009 Nonpublic Teacher of the Year Finalist by the New Jersey Council for Private Education (NJ CAPE) and the New Jersey Department of Education Advisory Committee for Non-public Schools.

Dellanno has taught for 30 years, the last 25 of which at Union Catholic. She is a graduate of Montclair State University with a BA in English and has graduate credits from Rutgers University and Kean University. She is currently pursuing a Master in Science degree in school leadership at St. Joseph’s University.


Dellanno has taught a variety of English courses at Union Catholic and served as the English Department chairperson, the humanities curriculum specialist, and the co-chair of the Middle States Accrediting Association evaluation team.

As part of her community service, Dellanno has served as a writing/SAT/college application coach for 20 years and worked as a member if the Engagement Encounter Weekend team for the Archdiocese of Newark. Her accomplishments include her work on the Beginning Teachers’ Assistance Program (BTAP) at Union Catholic and the building of the Union Catholic on-line library.

Union Catholic Principal, Sister Percylee Hart, RSM states, “Mrs. Dellanno is a consummate educator who embraces and models the educational technology of the 21st century through her use of SmartBoard Technology and on-line resources and instructions. She is a leader in developing and implementing co-curricular initiatives and provides students with hands-on experiences in on-line research using a variety of databases.”

In summarizing her philosophy of education, Dellanno states, “I want my students to feel valued, successful, and empowered because the teacher is responsible for an environment where optimal learning can take place.”
