Parlin Man Killed By Passenger Train

SOUTH AMBOY – A NJ Transit train struck and killed a 54-year-old Parlin man at a street-level crossing in South Amboy on Wednesday.

Witnesses told NJ Transit police that the man, identified as Mark Jamison, jumped in front of a New York-bound train as it came through the John Street crossing at about 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 21, according to agency spokesman Dan Stessel.

Even though the train was only traveling at 27 mph because it was nearing the South Amboy train station and the engineer applied the emergency breaks, the train could not stop in time, Stessel said.

Passengers were transferred to another train to continue their journey after a one-hour delay. North Jersey Coast Line service in both directions was delayed approximately 15 minutes while investigators examined the scene because trains were forced to operate on a single track.
