RAHWAY—The fourth graders from Madison Elementary School in Rahway went on a walking tour to the Merchants and Drovers Tavern Museum on Oct. 20.
The tavern and inn were built in 1735. Due to its location on St. Georges Avenue, which at that time was a commonly traveled road, the tavern and inn provided food, drink, entertainment, and shelter for tired travelers. The tour brought the students back to the way life was in the 1700s.
Students also got a tour of the cemetery, which is next to the tavern. The boys and girls were fascinated with the age of some of the headstones on the graves and the sayings.
