Police Identify Victim In New Brunswick Homicide

NEW BRUNSWICK—The victim of a fatal shooting that was discovered in New Brunswick yesterday has been identified as a 40-year-old Franklin Township man, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan and New Brunswick Police Director Anthony A. Caputo announced today.

Todd Averette of Hillcrest Avenue in the Somerset section of Franklin was identified as the victim during a continuing investigation by the New Brunswick Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.


An autopsy, performed by Dr. Alex Zhang, a Middlesex County assistant medical examiner, determined Averette was the victim of a homicide and died from a gunshot wound.

Detective Joseph Nieves of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Scott Crocco of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office began the investigation after New Brunswick police received a 911 call at 9:10 a.m. on Oct. 19.

Police were dispatched to Maple Street, between Brookside Avenue and Somerset Street, and found the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:14 p.m. by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office.
