STATE—Although Chris Daggett’s campaign received positive marks for his performance in the first gubernatorial debate, the independent candidate’s ambitions seems to have been squashed in the second and last televised meeting with GOP gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie and incumbent Jon Corzine.
Expectations were high for the former EPA official, but most observers agree that Daggett failed to capitalize on his final opportunity to share the TV screen with his major party rivals.
After the debate, Daggett insisted he still has a chance but the two main contenders agree that the independent will not be a factor.
“This race is between me and Jon Corzine,” Christie told reporters at William Paterson University following Friday night’s debate, less than three weeks before Election Day.
“My strongest contrast is with Mr. Christie,” said Corzine, who defended his multi-million dollar campaign of television ads attacking his opponent’s character.
