RAHWAY—Rahway Middle School students in Mr. Petersen’s eighth grade social studies classes examined the spice trade and its effect on Europe. Students sampled chocolate before and after the addition of spices to determine which one tasted better.
The classes brainstormed why spices changed the lifestyle for Europeans in earlier centuries. Students then analyzed the notion of supply and demand. They concluded that this principle motivated Europeans to explore which eventually led to Columbus’ discovery of the New World.
