LINDEN—The only fight night in Linden this year will be held on Friday, Nov. 13, when the Linden Boxing Association, in conjunction with the Linden Public Property and Community Services Department presents the 76th annual New Jersey State Finals of the Diamond Gloves Boxing Tournament.
The full night of championship boxing entertainment is being sponsored by the Conoco Phillips Bayway Refinery and will be held at the Linden High School Gymnasium, located at 121 W. St. Georges Avenue. The first fight is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 each. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.
According to Linden Boxing Association founder Tony Orlando, “This is the tenth consecutive year that we are hosting the Diamond Glove Tournament State Finals here in Linden and also the tenth consecutive year that our friends from the Conoco Phillips Bayway Refinery are sponsoring the event. Without their sponsorship, we wouldn’t be able to have this successful night of amateur boxing that annually supports, through its proceeds, a varied amount of programs for our city’s youth.”
This year, the Linden Boxing Association will be honoring its president, Alfred A. Volpe, for his exceptional commitment to the sport of boxing and the youth of Linden. He has been a dedicated officer of the association since its inception and continues to provide leadership and guidance to the organization as it is run today. Since its inception the organization, the Linden Boxing Association has donated in excess of $329,000 to Linden Recreation-supported youth programs and has sponsored three scholarships annually to graduating Linden High School students.
Expected to be in attendance at this year’s championship bouts are Bobby Czyz, former World Light Heavyweight and Cruiserweight Champion; Emile Griffith, former World Welterweight, Junior Middleweight and Middleweight Champion; Chuck Wepner, former heavyweight contender and Lou Duva, the Hall of Fame boxing trainer and manager who has handled some of the greatest fighters in the world including 19 world champions.
