Perez Strikes Twice In First Half As NJCU Beats Brooklyn, 5-1

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Senior forward JILMAR PEREZ (Princeton, NJ/South Brunswick) scored twice in the first half as New Jersey City University outshot Brooklyn College, 36-2, and posted a 5-1 win over the Bridges in a non-conference game on Monday night at the Aviator.

NJCU snaps a four-game winless streak improving to 6-4-2 overall, while dropping Brooklyn to 3-6-2. It was the first meeting between the schools in Brooklyn, NY since September 18, 1980. The all-time series is even, 2-2. The Gothic Knights are 6-0 against CUNYAC conference opponents this year, outscoring those clubs, 40-3.

Sophomore forward WALTER AVANS (Roselle Park, NJ/Union Catholic) scored his team-best 11th goal of the year, while freshman midfielder GABRIEL AVANS (Roselle Park, NJ/Union Catholic) chipped in his fifth goal. Junior defender HENRY GUADALUPE (Prospect Park, NJ/Manchester Regional) also scored his first goal at NJCU.

Sophomore forward ALEX CERON (Belleville, NJ/Belleville), senior midfielder AWAL AHMED (Elizabeth, NJ/Linden) and sophomore defender BORDIVENS FRANCOIS (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) each had one assist.

Perez scored the first two goals of the game for the Knights—his third and fourth tallies of the year. He put NJCU up 1-0 at 12:05 of the first half, scoring on a volley off a cross from Ceron, who added his first assist. The goal snapped a team scoreless string of 277:33. Perez added an unassisted goal at 39:22 for a 2-0 halftime cushion. NJCU outshot Brooklyn 13-0 in the first half.

Walter Avans extended the lead to 3-0 at 51:19 finishing a breakaway set up by Ahmed’s fourth assist of the year.

Brooklyn scored its lone goal at 64:46 when freshman defender Rondel King (Trinidad & Tobago/ Abraham Lincoln) knocked in his first goal of the year off a corner kick by freshman defender Miguel Veliz-Fitz (Brooklyn, NY/FDR).

Leading 3-1, Gabriel Avans added an unassisted insurance goal at 70:59 before Guadalupe netted the final marker off Francois’ first assist.

Sophomore keeper MANNY LOJO (Clark, NJ/Union Catholic) made one save for the win. Brooklyn freshman keeper Anthony Sideris (Astoria, NY/ St. Demetrios) made 10 saves.

NJCU will return to action on Wednesday, October 7 at 5 p.m. in a non-conference meeting of Hudson County colleges as the Knights meet #13 ranked Stevens Institute of Technology—the 2008 national runner-up—at De Baun Field in Hoboken, NJ.
