Reading, Writing, and Quilting?

CLARK– Students in Mrs. Heaning’s first grade class at F.K. Hehnly School in Clark are uniquely illustrating the books they read through the art of quilting. They are creating “literature quilts” to go along with the books they are reading throughout the year.

In September, they launched the quilting project by reading “The Patchwork Quilt” by Valerie Flornoy and “The Keeping Quilt” by Patricia Placco. The class discussed how quilts are made and what they are used for and then made their patchwork squares based on their responses to “What would you use your quilt for?”

This is the first of many literature quilts to be made this year and the students are proud to show it off outside of their classroom for all to see.
