Deadline Dropout Stops GOP

UNION COUNTY—One Democrat freeholder will be re-elected on Nov. 3 because there are now only two Republican challengers.

Modesto “Moe” Miranda has dropped out of the race as a candidate for freeholder in Union County.

Republican Anthony Sytko and Nicole Cole are going to appear next to a blank slot labeled, “No nomination made.”

Republican Arthur Zapolski is running for surrogate against incumbent James LaCorte.

“The last day of the deadline, he dropped out and they had no replacement,” said the County Clerk’s election supervisor.

Miranda withdrew in a letter sent to the clerk’s office on Sept. 14, citing a change in his work schedule and responsibilities.

The GOP had until Sept. 16 to make a replacement, but failed to do so.

Attempts to reach county GOP Chairman Phil Morin were unsuccessful.
