EDISON—A bias incident report was filed with the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General following the arrest of a 16-year-old male who was charged with punching a 19-year-old man over the weekend, officials said yesterday.
The 16-year-old, whose name is being withheld because of his age, faces a charge of juvenile delinquency in the aggravated assault of the township man on Saturday, Sept. 19, in Edison.
While an initial investigation did not reveal evidence of a bias-related event, subsequent information obtained by members of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and Edison Police resulted in the filing of the bias incident report in accordance with guidelines established by the Attorney General’s Office.
The 16-year-old was charged after the township man, who is Jewish, told police he was punched at 7:25 p.m. while walking on Woodbridge Avenue, near Route 1. The matter is under active investigation.
Authorities ask that anyone with information on the incident call Sgt. John McElwain of the Edison Police Department at 1-732-248-7439.
