More Than 100 Workers Laid Off As Steel Plant Preps For Shutdown

PERTH AMBOY – Approximately 110 of 165 employees at the Gerdau Ameristeel mill in Perth Amboy were laid off Friday as the plant prepares for shutdown, according to a union official.

“It was very emotional. There were people with tears,” said Hipolito J.R. Rivera, president of United Steelworkers of America Local 9473.

Some maintenance workers and management will remain until Oct. 31 to complete the plant’s shutdown. Production stopped on Aug. 28 and the workers spent the last two weeks decommissioning  the mill, Rivera said.

In a statement, company spokesperson Santiago Fittipaldi said that Geradu Ameristeel is “currently in the middle of conducting an orderly shutdown of the Perth Amboy facility, but no date has yet been set as to when that process will be completed.”
