LINDEN – A Piscataway man was charged with assaulting a police officer who was attempting to break up a fight in front of the Luna Lounge on East St. Georges Avenue early Saturday morning.
Officers on a traffic stop noticed a large fight in front of the Luna Lounge at 1:43 a.m. on Sept. 6. They called for backup and attempted to restore order.
According to police, Byron D. Martin, 23, continued to yell and curse at the crowd and at the officers. Police confronted him, but he assumed a “fighting stance” and threatened to assault the officers, police said.
The officers announced that Martin was under arrest when it became clear that he would not back down, according to police. Martin attempted to flee, but several officers tackled and handcuffed him, police said.
Once Martin was placed in the rear of a patrol car, he started to kick the rear window, police said. Officers decided to restrain him further. While Martin was being taken out of the patrol car, he spit in the face of Officer Scott Jones, police said.
Jones, 33, complained of blurry vision in his left eye and was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway for treatment, police said. He was able to return to full duty.
Martin was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. There were also two contempt warrants from Piscataway against him. His total bail was set at $20,600, cash and he was transported to the Union County Jail to await a court date of Sept. 14.
