MIDDLESEX COUNTY—Freeholder Ronald G. Rios, chair of the county’s Public Health and Education Committee, announced Middlesex County’s 2009-2010 seasonal influenza and pneumococcal immunization clinics.

Nineteen seasonal flu / pneumonia vaccination clinics are scheduled from Sept. 9 through Oct. 23 in communities served by the Middlesex County Public Health Department.

The clinics will be open to Middlesex County residents age 18 years and older. There will be a charge of $10 per vaccination. The $10 fee will be accepted in cash only, and exact change is strongly recommended.

Medicare will be billed for seasonal influenza immunizations where applicable. Residents without Medicare coverage will be charged $10 for the immunization. Proof of age, residency and Medicare coverage is required and no one under 18 years of age will be vaccinated.

This information is for seasonal influenza vaccination only, not the Novel H1N1 (swine flu) vaccination. When the H1N1 vaccination is ready, it will be offered without charge.

“The single best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits can also help protect against the flu,” said David A. Papi, director-health officer of the Middlesex County Public Health Department.

To reduce the spread of flu:
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Clean your hands often.  (Keep alcohol-based hand sanitizers in your purse, car and backpack, when soap and water is not available)
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as much as possible.
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and then throw away your used tissue.
• Get regular exercise, enough rest and eat healthy, balanced meals.

Pneumococcal immunizations will also be available by appointment only to Middlesex County residents who are 65 years of age and older and who have not previously received this vaccine. Medicare will be billed where applicable. Residents without Medicare coverage will be charged $10 for the immunization.  Proof of age is required.

For a pneumococcal vaccine appointment, call 1-732-745-3100 between 2 and 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
