SOUTH AMBOY—Third Ward Councilman William Schwarick, 63, was sworn in at the Sept. 2 city council meeting, replacing John O’Connell, who resigned after the Department of Defense assigned him to a post in Washington, D.C.
Schwarick is a former Secret Service agent, who worked under seven presidents and protected the pope and the Queen of England during his 29-year career.
Schwarick, who was born in South Amboy, said the job allowed him to travel to every continent except Australia.
With roots in South Amboy dating back to the 18th century, Schwarick’s family has a tradition of service in law enforcement officials.
His father was a South Amboy Police sergeant, his grandfather was a Pennsylvania Railroad Police lieutenant and his son is a Morris County Sheriff’s officer.
