WOODBRIDGE – Authorities have charged an Iselin man with assault and drunk driving in connection with a car crash that injured two Rahway residents on Friday.
Police said that Tommy Markov, 34, was driving a 2004 Nissan headed west on Gill Lane at approximately 4 p.m. on Aug. 21 He swerved across the double yellow line and crashed head-on into a 2000 Mercedes, authorities said. Firefighters needed to remove the driver from the Mercedes.
An officer found Markov sitting on the curb smelling of alcohol, police said. A witness told police that she saw him go back into his car after the crash to remove a half-full bottle of Corona and throw it into the nearby woods, authorities said.
The officer recovered the bottle and also found a spilled, broken bottle of whiskey on the back seat of the Nissan, according to the accident report.
Markov was hospitalized with a chest injury; the driver of the Mercedes had a possible broken leg and the passenger of the Mercedes had a possible back injury, police said.
Markov has been charged with aggravated assault by auto, tampering with evidence, driving while intoxicated and other traffic violations, police said. His bail was set at $25,000, with no 10 percent cash option.
