PERTH AMBOY – Israel Varela has been appointed to the Perth Amboy Board of Education to replace long-time member Raymond Geneske.
Varela mounted an unsuccessful campaign for a seat on the school board this April and had previously been a candidate for Perth Amboy’s city council. He owns an auto body shop in the city.
The new school board member said that one of the things he wants to do is get parents and business owners involved in the school district.
Geneske, a retired schoolteacher who had been a school board member for ten years, resigned in June citing pending legal action. He later pleaded guilty to money laundering in connection with former Mayor Joseph Vas’ 2006 congressional campaign.
