SOUTH AMBOY – A retired Secret Service agent will be sworn in to replace Third Ward Councilman John O’Connell at next month’s city council meeting, according to Mayor John O’Leary, who is also the chairperson of the South Amboy Regular Democratic Organization.

William J. Schwarick, 63, served in Washington D.C. for 29 years before retiring in 2000. The South Amboy native moved back to the city after retirement.

“I would love to see South Amboy continue on the journey that it appears to be on, including the resurrection of Broadway, bringing in the ferry and making it a cleaner, better place to live in,” Schwarick said.

O’Connell resigned from the council after accepting a six- to 12-month assignment “with a joint agency under the Department of Defense” in Washington, D.C. He is a lieutenant colonel and staff judge with the 177th Fighter Wing of the New Jersey Air National Guard.
