Edison Man Charged With Shaking Baby To Death

EDISON – An Edison man is accused of shaking his 10-week-old daughter to death, according to a criminal complaint filed in Superior Court last week.

Nilesh Patel, 39, is charged with aggravated manslaughter in the death of his daughter, Niral Patel, who was born June 7.


Deputy Public Defender Richard Preston entered a not guilty plea for Patel.

Authorities said that Patel and his wife brought the child to JFK Medical Center in Edison on Aug. 18. Hospital staff notified police that the girl was close to death from apparent physical abuse. The child died at the hospital at 2:24 p.m. on Aug. 19.
