RAWAY – A Carteret man drove his Jeep Cherokee into the Rahway River last week, and firefighters responded with their boat to rescue him, authorities said. No one was injured, but East Hazelwood Avenue was closed at Edgar Street and Leesville Avenue for about an hour on Thursday morning, Aug. 20, police said.

Kevin Garris, 45, will be charged with careless driving, police said.

“He said he looked down at his feet for a minute, and when he looked back up he struck the curb and went into the river,” said Officer Joseph Kostick.

Authorities said that Garris drove off an unfenced section of road, a few blocks away from a guardrail that was installed to prevent drivers from heading into the river.
