EDISON – Police officers forced their way into a burning house on Perry Road on last Wednesday morning, waking a mother and her three children and evacuating them to safety.

A neighbor called 911 at approximately 1:20 a.m. on Aug. 12 to report the fire. Police arrived on the scene first and found the garage portion of the home burning, authorities said. When they learned that people might be in the house, Sgt. John Vaticano and patrolmen Joe Kenney, Michael Horvath,
Michael Carullo and John Halulka kicked in the front door and led a mother and three children, ages 3, 7 and 8 to safety, police said.

The family was treated by the Edison First Aid Squad and the Edison Fire Department extinguished the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials speculated that it started in a pile of stacked debris in front of the garage.
