RAHWAY – The Rahway Republican Committee is calling for Councilman Bobby Akbar to resign from his elected position by 4 p.m. tomorrow.
Akbar was suspended with pay from his teaching position in the Rahway school system earlier this week, but the Board of Education did not release any details. Earlier this year, Akbar was arrested in a domestic violence case involving a fellow teacher. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of disturbing the peace in June.
“If the Rahway School Board found sufficient evidence to suspend Mr. Akbar from the classroom, it is quite obvious they feel he violated the rules of the system,” said Kevin Retcho, one of the leading voices calling for Akbar’s resignation.
Retcho says he will lead a protest with support from the local GOP next week if Akbar does not step down.
Akbar, a Democrat, was sworn into office as councilman representing the First Ward on Jan. 5
