Edison Township Joins Social Networking Website

EDISON—The Township of Edison has entered the world of internet social networking via its own Twitter page – twitter.com/EdisonNJ.

Now, information on issues such as traffic advisories, tax bill updates and recreation volleyball are posted – or tweeted, to use the social networking vernacular – to the Township’s Twitter page.

Twitter – located at www.twitter.com – is a free social networking and mirco-blogging service that allows users to send and read messages known as “tweets.” The tweets are similar to text messages sent via cellular phone. An individual using Twitter can use up to 140 characters to post a message. This message is posted to the individual’s page and can be seen by anyone who is following the individual on Twitter. Tweets can also be sent to and posted from users’ cellular phones.

“We have made a commitment to use technology to communicate with residents and businesses. This is the next step. We upgraded EdisonNJ.org so people can come to an interactive, informative site. Now, we’re going to bring the message directly to people whether they receive a text on their cell phone or an update they read on their Twitter page,” said Communications Director Jerry Barca.

During Mayor Jun Choi’s administration Edison Township has redesigned and rebranded its web site. With Choi’s focus on using technology to make government work more efficiently, Edison has launched a number of web-based initiatives. The new additions include:

• Citizen Service Request, where residents can ask their government questions or raise concerns utilizing the online form.

• Online property taxes can now be paid via EdisonNJ.org.

• Recently added Edison e-Permit System, which allows businesses and residents to fill out and pay for permits online.

• GovDeals, an eBay-like auction site found on the township web site that generates revenue through the sale of surplus property.
