AVENEL – An East Jersey State Prison corrections officer allegedly supplied two cell phones to an inmate in exchange for money in a deal with the Latin Kings street gang, authorities said.
Glenn Adams, 48, of Union was arrested last week on charges of official misconduct and bringing an electronic communications device into prison, authorities said. He was being held in custody at an undisclosed location in lieu of $50,000 bail. Adams has been suspended without pay and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
The charges stem from an investigation that began in January when an unnamed inmate was discovered with two cell phone chargers and an earpiece, according to a spokesman from the Prosecutor’s Office.
Investigators believe that Adams obtained cell phones and other electronic equipment from associates of the Latin Kings and smuggled the items to the inmate between December and February. Authorities said that Adams received cash payments from the associates during meetings in Newark.
