Police Investigate Sayreville Murder

SAYREVILLE – Police are investigating the death of a 55-year-old woman found beaten to death in her  Sayreville apartment last week.

A building maintenance supervisor discovered Patricia Cantaloupe’s body last Friday morning, after noticing an unusual odor coming from her apartment in the Winding Wood complex on Winding Wood Drive, authorities said.

Authorities said that Cantaloupe was pronounced dead at 9:35 a.m. on July 31, but she had been killed several days before. “She did not die that day or within the last few days,” Assistant Middlesex County Prosecutor Nicholas Sewitch said.

After an autopsy revealed that Cantaloupe suffered multiple blunt force injuries, her death was ruled a homicide, authorities said. Police believe that she was killed in her home.

Officials did not comment on whether there were any suspects or what the motive might be for Cantaloupe’s death, however a spokesman from the Prosecutor’s Office said that the killing was “not a random act.”

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the case to call Detective Tom Fischer of the Sayreville Police Department at (732) 727-4444 or Investigator Scott Crocco of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s homicide unit at (732) 745-3300.
