COLONIA – This summer, Springwood Swim Club has come to be known as “Colonia’s Best Kept Secret.” Although the nine-acre property is certainly not small enough to be overlooked, most Colonia residents will tell you they had never heard of it until this summer.

After a year’s worth of renovations, Springwood, located at the corner of McKinley Avenue and High Street, is brand new again for the first time since 1954.

Since last fall, Springwood has been undergoing renovations, which included a full replacement of the original swimming pool, as well as construction of a brand new kiddie pool, complete with a sprinkler system. The pool also added a new diving board and, for the first time, a water slide. Also for the first time, the club is equipped with WiFi.

With all of these changes, Springwood Swim Club was finally ready to go on display and start bringing in new members this summer. To date, 54 brand new families have joined the small community that is Springwood.

According to pool manager John O’Halloran, they’re still looking for about 20 more. With all the rain in May, the opening of the pool was delayed three weeks. “I think if we opened on time we would have reached our goal,” O’Halloran said, “People were worried about us not opening and chose not to join.”

While this may have been true last month, there’s certainly nothing to worry about now. The swim club is thriving, packed with families every day. The lifeguards have certainly noticed the increase in members. “It’s so much more fun!” gushed lifeguard Emily O’Halloran, “There are so many more kids, there’s never a dull moment.”

Jenna Sardone, a lifeguard who has been at Springwood for three summers now, sees the difference outside of the water as well. “It’s such a nice community,” Sardone said, “All the families here, coming together, meeting new people, it’s really great!”

Although there have been many changes this year, the Springwood community is not satisfied just yet. They look forward to the renovation of the basketball and tennis courts, which will take place in the near future.
