Union Catholic Students Earn Recognition For Test Results

SCOTCH PLAINS – Three dozen world language students from Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2009 National Spanish Examination.

The students earned a total of five gold, eleven silver, and ten bronze placements along with ten honorable mentions.

“Attaining any placement or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious”, said Kevin Cessna, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with well over 107,000 students participating in 2009.”

The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6 through 12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

Receiving national recognition:  Michelle Ryngel ’11, Ann Cierpial ’12, Adrianna DeGazon ’12, Gabrielle Aquino ’12 and Demie Teixeira ’12 achieved gold status.  Silver status was by Christopher Brown ’09, Roberto Gomez ’09, John Szilagyi ’09, Alex Bricki ’10, Jaime Ciocon ’10, Thomas Kaluzny ’10, Brian Hartnett ’11, Sean Siburn ’11, Sean Sarra ’11, David Schanz ’12 and Kathryn Lubin ’12.  Bronze status was achieved by Melissa Carey ’09, James Lubin ’09, Nina Napolitano ’09, Megan Carr ’10, Alex Tran ’10, Brian Milanes ’11, Meghan Gaczynski ’11, Michelle Peters ’12, Sarah Fox ’12 and Jonathan Reidinger ’12.

Honorable mentions went to Ashley Wytenus ’09, Gina Egidio ’09, Kelsey Mahler ’09, Ryan Carr ’09, Magan Mauro ’09, Samantha Marques ’10, Colleen Cassidy ’11, Kimberly Esguerra ’12, Kathleen Sullivan ’12 and Timothy Leach ’12.

Additionally, the New Jersey chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese awards prizes to New Jersey students based on the results of the National Spanish Examination.  The following students received awards from the NJAATSP:

Michelle Ryngel – 1st Place, Ann Cierpial – 3rd Place, Roberto Gomez – 3rd place, and honorable mention to Gabrielle Aquino and John Szilagyi.
