In recent months, I have maintained my strong convictions in serving the best interests of the 19th legislative district by focusing on an endless spectrum of constituent services which have included our continued efforts of providing assistance to over 1,500 families in the district facing foreclosure. I am proud to announce a recent piece of my legislation that has been signed into law, known as the “New Jersey Residential Mortgage Lending Act.”

Specifically, this law mandates the establishment of new state licensing standards, business practices, and oversight for individuals acting as mortgage loan originators, and applies to loan activities in both the primary and secondary mortgage loan markets. In addition to helping homeowners, a recently passed bill which I was a prime sponsor of, requires confirmation of financial assistance for eligible homeowners voluntarily closing or replacing petroleum underground storage tanks, and expands eligibility for financial assistance. This piece of legislation permits an eligible homeowner to apply for financial assistance prior to undertaking such a project and requires the New Jersey Economic Development Authority to issue written confirmation regarding the homeowner’s eligibility for reimbursement.  Both of these bills are aimed to help homeowners facing struggles during current economic times.

For our senior population, we have provided assistance in obtaining energy and gas assistance. In addition, we have helped with the Senior Freeze Program and Digital Television coupon applications. In an effort to improve the quality of life for our senior population residing in assisting living facilities, I am proud to have sponsored legislation that has been signed into law requiring assisted living facilities to have defibrillators on site and properly training its employees to use defibrillators.

Additionally, in recent weeks, I am proud to have been part of an effort that memorializes the United States Congress to pass legislation requiring the U.S. Department of Defense to coordinate and share their veteran database information with the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and similar agencies in other states to help coordinate and provide outreach services to our veterans. Additionally, I was proud to sponsor legislation that will help establish the Troops to College Program in the Commission on Higher Education to assist veterans in making the transition into the college classroom.

In keeping with my passion for improving education and offering students opportunities for a brighter future, we have kept our local school districts abreast of various useful information regarding free dental programs being sponsored in the district, summer job programs for high school students, and provide information and brochures regarding study tips, homework assistance, among many other points of correspondence.

In an effort to expand the welfare of our children, most recently, a very important bill that will improve the safety of our children on the Internet will impose penalties on certain offenders and use the monies to establish a “Computer Crime Prevention Fund” which will be appropriated by the Department of Law and Public Safety for investigating and prosecuting computer-related crimes and funding continuing educational programs on high technology crimes and the existing 24-hour toll-free computer crime hotline telephone service as well, as other programs designed to enhance public awareness of computer-related crimes.

These are only a few examples of how we have been proactive in addressing the issues of our constituents and remained strong in our convictions of working to help better serve the people of the 19th legislative district. Please be informed that my office is dedicated to providing the best constituent services in the district and we will remain open all summer long to help with any of your needs.
